The Port of Lyttelton in Christchurch, New Zealand has successfully constructed a new cruise berth that incorporates innovative, environmentally conscious design solutions. As part of this project, over 2,000 x 4te Kyowa Filter Unit® Rockbags were deployed to provide scour protection to the seawall beneath the berth.
Scour protection is a critical component of marine infrastructure as it prevents erosion and ensures long-term structural stability, particularly from the action of ships`bow thuster operations.
Manufactured from 100% recycled materials, the Kyowa Filter Unit® Rockbags were chosen as a sustainable alternative to traditional rock armour, by the Consulting Engineers Haskoning. Their flexibility, ease of installation, and proven performance also made them an ideal choice.
This project illustrates how innovative engineering can work hand in hand with environmental stewardship to create resilient, future-focused marine infrastructure.
