Port of Tauranga Takes Preventive Action Against Coastal Erosion

The Port of Tauranga in New Zealand recently took proactive measures to protect one of its navigation beacons from the ongoing threat of coastal erosion. Located in a high-energy marine environment, the beacon was increasingly at risk from wave action during storms, jeopardizing vital navigation infrastructure.

To safeguard this structure, 80 x 4te Kyowa Filter Unit® Rockbags were deployed. These bags provide effective erosion protection and stabilize the surrounding seabed. Each Filter Unit® Rock Bag is made from 100% recycled materials, aligning with the Port’s commitment to environmentally responsible engineering solutions which were a key focus throughout the project’s planning and execution.

The use of Kyowa Filter Unit® Rockbags offered a sustainable and adaptable alternative to traditional rock armour, minimizing the environmental impact while ensuring long-term resilience against coastal forces.

This project highlights how innovation and sustainability can work together to protect critical marine assets and preserve coastal environments.
