In 2022/23 the Port of Devonport in Tasmania, Australia completed the extension and refurbishment of its cruise berth. Including sustainable engineering solutions into both structural integrity and environmental performance was a key driver to the Consulting Engineers, (Royal) Haskoning.
A key component of this project was the installation of over 1,700 Kyowa Filter Unit® Rockbags, made from 100% recycled materials, which provide reliable scour protection for the seawall beneath the berth, particularly from the effects of Bow Thruster activity.
Scour protection is essential for safeguarding marine infrastructure against erosion caused by currents and propeller wash. After conducting scale model testing, the 8t 2W Type Filter Unit® Rockbags were identified as the most effective option, offering optimal stability and resilience in the specific marine conditions at the site.
This project serves as a prime example of how innovative technologies can be applied to achieve both environmental and operational excellence in the development of coastal and port infrastructure.
