Rebuilding Resilience at Queen Salote International Wharf, Port of Tonga

In the aftermath of the volcanic eruption that struck the Pacific Island of Tonga in early 2022, essential reconstruction efforts were undertaken to strengthen and protect the nation`s key maritime infrastructure. One of the most critical priorities was safeguarding the Queen Salote International Wharf seawall from future cyclonic wave attacks.

In this project, Kyowa Filter Unit® Rockbags were chosen as the preferred solution by Haskoning, the Consulting Engineers. Their use delivered a combination of performance, speed, flexibility, and high environmental credentials.

To meet the site’s unique conditions, the Filter Unit® Rockbags were installed using a flat placement method, optimising stability on the limited slope angle. In an effort to promote sustainability, they were filled with locally- sourced recycled concrete, reducing the need for scarce natural rock, and lowering the project’s overall carbon footprint.

This project is another strong example of how Kyowa Filter Unit® Rockbags are protecting critical infrastructure across the globe — combining innovative engineering with environmental care.
